Sustainable Visit

Manaakitanga is a feeling, an invitation, and a responsibility. The responsibility is placed on the people (whenua) of Rotorua to provide guardianship over Rotorua’s resources and an invitation to our visitors (manuhiri) to share in these resources.

A sustainable destination exists not only on the actions of the host community, but also on the actions of visitors. PLAY YOUR PART and contribute to the sustainability of Rotorua as a visitor destination.

Make your money count

Ensure sustainable tourism operators prosper by seeking out operators that have committed to sustainable business practices. Choose Rotorua Sustainable Tourism Charter member businesses when planning your stay in Rotorua – look for the Charter logo in our information centre and in businesses.

Leave less than footprints

The old cliche “take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints” is a valid comment to live by, however today we ask our visitors to leave even less. Stay on marked trails and avoid taking shortcuts that create erosion and soil compaction in fragile environments.

Take time out

The daily distances that we typically travel in the modern world is a significant contributor of ozone depleting carbon emissions and global climate change. Increase your level of enjoyment by spending less time travelling and more time at each place learning and understanding the intricacies of the place.

Protect Rotorua’s unique biodiversity

The geothermal environment in and around Rotorua is home to flora species unique only to Rotorua. Similarly, some species of native birdlife found in few other places throughout New Zealand flourish in the native forests around Rotorua. Never take or damage the flora and take precautions to avoid disturbing the wildlife where possible.

Reduce waste

Many products we consume have components that require disposing of. Landfills are always a blot on the landscape and are typically larger than they need to be due to the volume of items which could have been reduced, reused or recycled. Help maintain the beauty of our landscape by avoiding waste where possible. Seek out products with minimal components requiring disposal. Re-use items for the duration of their life. Use recycling receptacles where available and compact down items for the landfill.

Seek out new friends

Opportunities will be available during your Rotorua visit to observe the customs and traditions of the tangata whenua (people of the land) and to interact with the local community. Respect customs of the tangata whenua by becoming aware of their values and acting responsibly in situations when these values should be observed.
